Edibles: An introduction

From understanding onset times to deciding on an appropriate dose, there are a few basics to master in the universe of edibles. Let’s walk through the key points so you’re up to speed and ready to go.

What’s an edible anyway?

A cannabis edible, or simply “edible,” is a food or drink product that contains cannabis extract–whether psychoactive THC, non-psychoactive CBD, or a combination of the two. A popular alternative to smoking and vaping, edibles range from chocolates and cookies to gummies and infused beverages.

How long does it take to feel the effects, and how long does it last?

One of the first things to know about edibles containing THC is that they take a little while for the effects to kick in–but once they do, the benefits and relief provided by THC can last for an extended period of time. Onset times tend to range between 30 and 90 minutes, while the full “arc” of effects can last for several hours. Compared to alternative forms of consumption, edibles are slow to kick in, but steadily build and provide along, tapering finish.

What’s the right amount to take?

When it comes to edibles, dosing is everything. Your body can respond more powerfully to cannabis when eaten compared to other forms of consumption, so it’s important to be mindful of how much you take. Fortunately, pre-packaged edibles are measured in milligrams of THC, so you can start low, microdosing with 2.5 mg, then building to an average dose of 10mg to find the dose that’s right for you. And remember: don’t eat more while waiting for the effects to fully kick in-everybody metabolizes THC differently.

Depending on your physicality, you will feel the benefits of THC at varying moments in the window of time outlined in all cannabis edibles packaging.

Enlightened only carries regulated edibles which have incredibly accurate dosing to recreate the same experience time after time. A reliable experience is important in helping you get a handle on how your own body responds to THC in edible form.
