A Deeply Rooted History

8000 BCE: Trusted Friend

From canvas and rope to medicine and entertainment, the cannabis plant has been valued by humans for thousands of years. Indigenous to Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, cannabis is thought to be one of the earliest plants to be cultivated by farmers, with evidence dating back as far as the pre-Neolithic period. Over the millennia, medical uses have included everything from treating pain and anesthesia to blood clots, tape worms, and constipation. Humans and cannabis share a long and dynamic history.

1937: Reefer Madness in the United States

Though in the 1880s recreational “hashish parlors” could be found in nearly every major American city along the east coast, state laws began to slowly restrict its access in the decades to follow. Eventually, the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 made possession or transfer of cannabis illegal throughout the United States under federal law, except for medical and industrial uses. Ironically, cannabis shot into the mainstream when the Federal Government made sweeping attempts to ban its recreational use before it had become truly widespread. The creation of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics in 1930 was fueled by a racist agenda to marginalize Hispanic and Black communities in the face of an increase of Mexican Immigrants into the US. In tandem, the age of Reefer Madness (associated with the propagandistic film of the same name) was filled with terrifying narratives and falsehoods that also crippled the then-burgeoning hemp industry. The economic ripple effect helped prop up textile (nylon & cotton) and fossil fuel industries that became deeply embedded into American politics.

1960s: Symbol of Peace

In the 50’s and 60’s, Hippie culture and committed activism collided into one ideology and the United States went through a deep renaissance of culture. After decades of restriction and repression, recreational cannabis becomes a symbol of peace and unity in the US counterculture. The quest begins for cannabis strains that can flourish on US soil. Breeders blend traditional indicas and sativas to produce strains that can thrive in various growing conditions. World map with cannabis landraces pinned

1996: Medical Marijuana in California

In the 1970s and 80s, the medical benefits of cannabis began to be discovered and innovated on, showing promise in helping with AIDS and cancer treatments. The people suffering from the illness revealed a vital new perspective on cannabis after decades of demonization and incarceration, leading to the passing of California’s prop 215 in 1996. Following California’s legalization of medical marijuana, other states began to follow suit.

2010: Colorado Regulates Cannabis

Colorado becomes the first US state to legalize recreational cannabis, while CBD is rediscovered for its therapeutic benefits. Meanwhile, the medical community begins to accept cannabis as an effective treatment for multiple conditions and an effective alternative to many prescription drugs.

2020+: Brave New World

The world of cannabis is evolving and transforming at record speed. Recreational use is becoming legal across more and more states and countries, while science is making larger investments into understanding its medical and therapeutic benefits. Cultivation is reaching new levels of expertise as labs make increasingly pure cannabis concentrates, are able to perfect the growth of hybrid strains for personalized health and wellness, and deliver therapeutic CBD supplements to the market.
